Framingham will soon be facing another operational override whose sole
purpose is to enhance the salaries and benefits of Framingham teachers.
Framingham's General Fund 2007 revenues go up another $5 million to $179 million and the school's fiscal 2007 budget stands at roughly over $105 million (everything included). Town and school officials still claim they will be short by roughly $6 million. In essence, they want a six percent increase or $11 million for a town whose population is declining, but "bilingual" students are increasing unexpectedly. The school committee would have you believe the $5 million shortage will cause "devastating" cuts. Definition: "devastating" -- to lay waste, destroy. The simplest definition of financial irresponsibility is an inability to live within one's means, and as such I consider the Framingham schools to be financially irresponsible. The taxpayers of Framingham simply ask that the Framingham schools live within their means as we do. We can only hope that it's not too much to ask given all the money we give the schools. As always, behind the scenes, we can observe the unabashed, unending greed of the Framingham Teachers Association (a union by any other name). The student/teacher ratio in Framingham is already an abysmally low 11.5 to 1. Over 21 percent of the students are bilingual, 17 percent are SPED, and SAT scores are significantly lower now than 40 years ago. |
