How will override help? Tuesday, December 7, 2004

HAROLD J. WOLFE, Framingham Letter: : How will override help? Tuesday, December 7, 2004 The fundamental question to ask yourself about this pending Capital Override of 2005 in Framingham is, "After $90 million has been spent, how will my life be better?"  If you can't figure it out, this is not your override.  Say NO, and wait for the next one to come by your way, which I suspect will be in 2007.

You always hear about waste, corruption and patronage in government.  The root cause is simply too much money available to be spent.  The simple solution is to choke off the money supply.  You cannot have waste if there isn't too much to waste.  Think about this when you consider the proposed override in Framingham.

If the propopsed capital override passes Town Meeting, the "Yes" people will have catchy slogans on their signs.  Between the lines, you can read things like, "Bring on that cheap illegal labor, toss the seniors" or "Make Framingham Expensive, Toss the Riff-Raff!"

As a community, we cannot afford a three percent annual salary increase for police and fire.  Along with increases in health insurance and retirement benefits, the police and fire department would be getting more like a five percent increase per year and we happen to live in a Proposition 2 1/2 world.

The police department already spends too much time on detail work and lets law enforcement become a secondary concern.  Note the increasing bank robberies and muggings.  We all know the job of flagmen can be done for $12/hour instead of $38 for police detail.  As the police do this detail work, they shine as a visible beacon of waste in government.

The teachers received a 8.75 percent increase over three years.

Whoever negotiated these contracts were not very considerate of the Framingham taxpayers.

Can anyone besides me see the explosive laden freight train called "The Operational Override of 2007" coming down the tracks of time?

As G. Gordon Liddy said, "A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which debt he proposes to pay off with your money."  Check out http://www.no-more-overrides.org to see how liberals will waste your money.
