Don't endorse latest override Sunday, October 3, 2004
Sumner Weisman, Framingham Metrowest Daily News
Well, here we go again. Framingham wants another override. Surprise, surprise.

The Town Manager has put together another Christmas list of goodies to hit the taxpayers with -- $2 million for the installation of wireless Internet access.  Most of us taxpayers can't afford that for ourselves, but George has to have the latest goodies.

He has calculated that the average homeowner would only have to pay an additional $150 per year in real estate taxes.  The Capital Budget Committee chairwoman, though, said that when the new assessments come out, the increase will be $400 to $500.  "How are they going to afford it," she wisely asked.

Politicians always low-ball the predicted cost of things.  A few items that come to mind are the Iraq war, the Big Dig, the Medicare bill, and now the Framingham override.  If they told us the real cost up front, we would raise too much of a ruckus.  They don't lie -- they're just "veracity-impaired."

Unfortunately, the editors at the MDN have never seen an override they didn't like.  For once, I ask you to consider the plight of the taxpayers, and don't endorse this one.  There comes a time when we just have to draw the line and say, "Enough's enough."
