Library is not affordable Tuesday, January 18, 2005
Antoinette K. Burrill, Framingham Metrowest Daily News
The Framingham Town Meeting member who wrote "Library accessibility" (1/15/05) stated in part, "It was stupid on Town Meeting's part." I think selfish is more appropriate.

I voted no on both articles. I will vote no again when the issue of construction to replace the present Christ McAuliffe Library comes before us.  The following are some of the reasons for my no vote:

  1. According to the 2003 Annual Report, pg. 223, "The final menu of service reductions that the library trustees voted to implement was as follows:  Elimination of Saturday service at the main library in July and August;  Elimination of Sunday service at the main library in September and May;  Elimination of Friday service at the McAuliffe Branch from September through June..."   If the present libraries could not be funded and staffed, how could a larger library be funded for service:
  2. Any statements regarding a larger library attracting more business for the Pinefield Shopping Center is utterly ridiculous.
  3. Some of our previous projects have not gone well.  There were problems or additional monies requested for the following:  police station, Cameron School, Framingham High School, Woodrow Wilson School and the Main library.
However, the most important reason -- we cannot afford it.

Real estate tax bills were just received.  For many, the choice will be food, oil, medicine or the real estate tax.  I do agree with the previous writer when he said the taxpayers must decide in the April town election.  I hope the News will print the recorded vote of Town Meeting Members.  A library that is accessible is very important; however, we have two libraries and many school libraries -- the high school library will be open to the public and meets ADA requirements.  However, quality of life for our seniors is deteriorating daily.
