During the coming weeks, there will be much discussion of the FY07 Budget for
the town as leaders scramble to close the gap. This annual spring
ritual will have leaders wringing their hands and bashing the state for
not funding their many mandates.
There will be school supporters who believe that an operational override is the key to closing the budget gap. Framingham barely passed an override in June 2002 with the threat of closing the Stapelton School a key issue. One year after the override, the Juniper Hill closed because of budget constraints. Recent tax re-evaluation has pushed homeowners tax bills up rapidly, and energy costs are really putting great pressure on people as their net income decreases. The override will not be successful this time. There is organized opposition in place, the changing of the Board of Selectmen leaves some doubt that the override could get on the ballot, and many area towns are rejecting the overrides. |
